Let’s look at the process of learning a new language.
Indeed, you need to understand and remember many new words. But there is something even more fundamental you must do. You must be able to retain the new data. Now, retaining data is a skill. And it can be developed. When you practice and practice and practice it – you get better and better in doing it.
Flashcards are a great method to practice retaining data, and they have a bonus. When used correctly – they can be quite fun.

So what are flashcards and how can you use them?
Flashcards are cards which are flashed, or in other words, shown quickly, to the student. He then needs to recall and say the word which correctly describes the flashcard. The actual card can show a word, a picture or an illustration.

For example, a teacher could have a set of cards about weather. It would contain different cards, such as a card with a picture of rain, a card with a picture of snow, and so forth. The teacher would divide the class into several groups and begin a game. The purpose would be to win as much points as possible. During this activity, the teacher flashes (shows briefly) a card to the class, one after the other. The first team to say the right English word for that card gets a point. The team with the most points – wins.

Another example would be of a student using flashcards by himself. He could write a word in English on one side of the card, and put that word’s meaning on the other side of the card. He could use these cards daily to practice his vocabulary. He could do it at home, on the way to work or school (if he’s using public transportation), and so forth. He might not be competing with other students for points, but he could make a game out of it anyway, by trying to get more “points” than he got the day before.

As you can see, this method of learning turns the process into a game and adds some fun to the deal.
There is basically no limit to what you can do with flashcards. You can make all sorts of games, quizzes, competitions and other vocabulary activities. You can practice with them online, play cards and group games offline, repeat your exposure to the words – the list is endless!

There are some important things to remember, though. If you keep those in mind, you can maximize your vocabulary building process.

1) Don’t aim too high at first.
Now, let me clarify this one. There is nothing wrong with aiming high. On the contrary! Aim as high as your eyes can see! But it is wise not to try dealing with a lion, before you can handle cats… In other words, take a gradual approach for advancing. This will probably get you there faster than trying to get everything at once.
So don’t start practicing SAT vocabulary flashcards, if your vocabulary level is basic. Go step by step, improving further and further. You’ll get there in the end.
Find the right level for you.

2) Another important point to keep in mind is that even though flashcards can be a fun and easy memorizing exercise, they cannot and will not replace real usage of the language.
If you really want to learn a language, you must use it.
This works very much the same way as with any other subject you learn. If you really want to learn how to drive a car – you must practice actually driving a car. And if you really want to learn English – you must practice actually using English. This includes reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Flashcards can help in the process, but they cannot replace the real thing.

- They should be comprehensive.

The time span of about 2000 years and the little space the author has at her disposal enforces unwanted simplification. Nevertheless, it is a good introduction to the fascinating world of the history of the English language.

English belongs to the Indo-European family of languages, sharing its member status with French, Latin, Russian, Polish, Spanish, Persian, to name just a few. English began to develop in c. A.D. 450 when Anglo-Saxon tribes coming from Germany invaded the Isles. Before their invasion the language spoken in England was a form of Celtic. Words of Celtic origin are traceable in modern English, they survived mainly as place-names and rivers: Kent, Thames, Avon, Dover, Wye.

The language of the Anglo-Saxons is known as Old-English. Even though it is 'English', one is unable to understand it unless properly trained. Old-English was fully inflected with five grammatical cases, it possessed dual plural forms for referring to groups of two objects, in addition to the usual singular and plural forms. It also assigned gender to all nouns, even to inanimate objects: for example, se-o sunne (the Sun) was female, while se mo-na (the Moon) was male. Do you see now why poets refer sometimes to the Sun as 'she' and to the Moon as 'he'?

The ninth and tenth centuries are the time of the Viking invasions, also linguistically speaking. The nature of the inherited words varies from everyday expressions to administrative language which is linked with the Danish rule in England. What is interesting about Old English and the language of the Scandinavian invaders is that they were alike at that time. Nevertheless, linguists established that all the words beginning in sk- ( sky, skirt, etc.), place-names ending in -by (Grimsby, Derby, etc.) and even some legal terms (law, outlaw) are of Danish origin.

After the Battle of Hastings (1066) English was largely dominated by Norman French. Since the French ruled England they automatically introduced a mass of French words into the contemporary English language. The domains influenced by that continental language include ecclesiastical terms (religion, sermon, prayer, abbey) as well as legal (judge, bill, convict, imprison), food (dinner, supper, taste, salmon) and art (art, painting, beauty, music) ones.

Last but not least is the influence of Latin which had been present since the first invasion of the Romans. Latin was used by the educated individuals, e.g. monks, people at court. Three visible periods can be distinguished: the first occurred before the invasion of the Anglo-Saxon tribes, the second began when the they were converted to Christianity, and the third transfer of Latin-based words occurred after the Norman conquest in 1066 as some of the French words were derived from classical Latin.

How to Improve Spoken English

Millions of students need to improve their spoken English and only a small percentage of them will succeed. It isn't a matter of money or intelligence. It is simply a matter of working consistently and having a proper study method. It amazes me how few people study correctly.

I've had hundreds of students ask me how they can improve their spoken English. They've been told that speaking to foreigners is the only way. Obviously this helps, but it's a poor attitude to think that the only way to really improve your speaking is to have a native partner all the time. It simply isn't necessary. I'm going to give you some useful secrets that I'm sure will help you.

1. Improve your listening.
Vocabulary is nothing if you can't understand it when it's spoken. English that us used daily by native speakers is much simpler and much different that anything you can read. Listen to what they say to each other and make note of it. The only way to get better at listening is to practice it. Podcasts are a great way to do it but you need to find one for your level. Young kids can speak fluently in any language but they can't read or write. They learn all of this from listening.

It doesn't matter your age, you can make huge improvements if you spend more time listening to native speech you can understand. After a certain point, the English will start to flow naturally from your mouth. Don't quit though. This takes several hours of dedicated listening before you will notice anything. If you listen for 50 hours, you will be shocked at how much you've improved.

2. Write down your thoughts
This is not essay writing like you'd do in school. I'm talking about keeping a diary about your daily life. Use descriptive words and write in a way that you would speak. Try to write stories. Try to write exactly what you would say to your friends. Write a story about your dream vacation. Write a story about what you did during your favorite summer. Write about the first time you fell in love. Write about what you want to do with your life in the future.

The answers to all of those questions will be in the form of how you would actually speak. They are much different than essays or what you'd read in the newspaper. The more you write, the more you'll notice what you need to work on. There will be some stories you can tell more easily than others. If you can't write your ideas, you won't be able to say them. If you can write down what you want to say clearly, your spoken English will follow.

It's the combination between this style of writing and listening that will give you major progress with your speaking. You need to do both or you will get no results. If you want to spend some time reading too, that's fine, just remember, reading should only be to learn new words and don't make it take up the majority of your studying. It's fun and easy to read, but spend more time listening and writing. You'll be amazed at how clearly you'll be able to express yourself with even a small vocabulary.
